INFANTICIDE IS MURDER
PUBLISHED: 26th October, 2014 | By Cameron Wilson
What would you do if I told you that five year olds were being rounded up and killed? How about two year olds? What about new-borns? What's terrifying is that the last case isn't that far from the truth. Children who are born alive during an abortion are typically left to die of neglect. In other words, if an abortion is botched, the doctor will toss the living, breathing, screaming baby in the trash to die. If that knowledge didn't send a shiver up your spine, you are either paralyzed or a sociopath.
I don't care which side of the abortion debate you're on, once the child is no longer in the womb, it's not abortion, its infanticide. And infanticide is bad. I mean really, really, really bad. It's one of those things that is so bad, that if society ceases to have consensus on the fact that it is bad, then society can't really have consensus on anything being bad. Yet still there are those who speak up in defense of this practice. They say that because these children lack mental capacity it's OK to kill them. But if that's true, then what makes it wrong to kill a five year old given that his mental capacity is also less than our own? After all, what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. In the end, anything that could be used to justify killing a new-born child could equally well be used to justify killing a five year old child. The four major differences between new-borns and five year olds (size, level of development, environment and degree of dependency) are also differences between five year olds and thirty year olds. But none of those differences would justify killing a five year old, so why would they justify killing a new-born?
In the end, it all traces back to a bizarre philosophy whose main proponent is Dr. Peter Singer, a philosopher with tenure at Princeton University. He argues that what makes it wrong to kill a five year old child is that a five year old child has advanced mental abilities. As a new-born does not possess these abilities, then there is nothing wrong with killing new-borns.
Ignoring the many flaws of this position, however, let's take it to its natural conclusion. Peter Singer openly acknowledges that the position means that animals should not be killed for their meat. It is wrong to kill fish, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys, lamas or any other creature whose flesh we would eat.
Think about that for a second. It's wrong to kill a cow, but it's just fine to bump off a new-born! If it's your kid, go for it; but if it moos, its murder... Future historians will think it's hilarious that people in our age are crazy enough to think this way. In the meantime, unfortunately, new-borns will continue to be murdered and protestors will continue to stand up for the rights of walking Whoppers.
